It's been a year of high expectations for the Mercy tennis team.
At the beginning of the tennis season, coach Barbaros Ozdogan and his players had all attentions in their minds that they were going to win the conference championship. The Flyers started the year off racing to an outstanding 8-1 record to begin the season, but eventually didn't win the conference.
During the great season the Flyers had impressive victories over strong tennis programs like Philadelphia University, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Millersville University. At the end of the season the talented Fliers were able to finish out the year with a 10-3 record and earned a bid to the 2006 NCAA Division II championships, where they will face a very tough team from Assumption College in the first round of the tourney.
Coach Ozdogan said that he and his seniors discuss how match with Assumption College and that they will have to play their "A game" to be able to defeat them. The very relaxed, but strict, Ozdogan also believes in order for his team to get their first NCAA tournament win, his team will have to play with total dedication responsibility, perseverance, and commitment. He also believes his team already has the talent to pull this off, which is plausible as the Flyers finished the season ranked fourth in the Eastern Conference region, with a 10-3 record, as well as a 5-1 record in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference.
