Whether you want to make an appointment or simply drop in, the Learning Center allows students to come and obtain extra help from tutors. The Learning Center is available all day for students to come in to receive free tutoring.
The center offers help in writing, reading, speech, math, computers and natural sciences, with sessions ranging from 20 minutes to 30 minutes long.
"If a student needs help outside of the subjects offered, they are lined up with someone who has excelled in that field," said Peg Morris, coordinator of Dobbs Ferry Writing Lab states.
Students are encouraged to take advantage of the services offered at the Learning Center because "the tutors are very helpful and they interpret what the professors teach," stated Malaka Garrett, a student who receives English tutoring at the Learning Center.
Garrett, who has always struggled with English, started going to the Learning Center last semester for help with her essay writing. This semester she wants to receive help in better understanding the play Othello.
Going to the Learning Center on a daily basis, Garrett said, has not only increased her knowledge in English, but also her grade. Last semester she received an A- in her English 110 course.
"The professor who helped me was very professional, and she didn't make me feel stupid for asking questions. It was like having a conversation with a friend," Mercy College graduate Adalejisa Nunez stated about her experiences.
Nunez, who dropped in at the Learning Center, needed help in writing a paper for her economics class. She said the professor not only helped her write the paper but "told me where to find the information that I needed and how to outline it in my paper."
As a result, Nunez got an A on her paper.
"Students come in often for help, and once they come, they enjoy it so much that they come again. They gain courage to ask for help not only in the Learning Center, but in class," said Prof. Paul Trent, who has been tutoring speech in the Learning Center for 10 years.
When the students come back with progress reports, Morris stated that it is a "rewarding feeling for all of us to know we've helped students, and we've done statistical analysis which show students' grades go up after coming to the Learning Center."
She added, "The Learning Center is a supportive environment where students can gain confidence. It is for everyone, not just those who are struggling in a specific subject, but for those who are getting a 'B' and want to get an 'A'."
- The Learning Center can be found on the first floor of Main Hall on the Dobbs Ferry Campus and can be reached at (914) 674-7402.
