Bad luck has taken an ugly grasp on the men's baseball team this fall.
Thus far, the Flyers have suffered through 32 games, posting a 6-25-1 record.
Bad luck clipped the Flyers wings early in the season and then has continually attack them like a lion would attack their prey. Luckily for them, these games don't account for much as they prepare for the next semester.
Steve Balsan, Assistant Athletic Director, stated, "It's like 'spring training', only in the fall." He also stated, "The fall baseball season is considered the 'non-traditional' part of the season, which means that we don't keep official records or stats. Scores are kept of the games while they're being played..."
However this does not mask the Flyers sub-par play. Other than its lack of importance, there is arguably a silver lining inside the numbers. While the Flyers hit double digits in losses early and into the season, they were involved in quite a few "quality" or "close" games. A quality/close game in baseball is usually determined when a team wins or losses by four runs or less because one swing of the bat can tie or put your team ahead (pending base runners).
Out of their 25 losses, almost half of them were in quality games.
The Flyers had 11 close game losses. To add insult to injury, eight of the 11 losses were lost by three runs or fewer and four of them were lost by one run, including an 8-7 loss in ten innings against the University of New Haven and a 1-0 loss against Concordia.
In the 1-0 loss, Sean Braille pitched all nine innings, suffering the loss as the offense put up a donut on the board against their opponent for the first and only time this season.
It has to be considered a big if, but if the Flyers turned the tables and won the 11 close losses, their record would be 17-14-1, a far cry from where they currently sit.
Instead, the team has six games remaining to post a respectable season (results not available at press time). Even if the Flyers win all their remaining games, they will be 12-25-1.
If the Flyers had pulled won their quality games and posted a 17-14-1 record, they could have lost all of the remaining games and still post a better record than the 12-25-1.
