Multiple Campus Deans, along with other college employees, were terminated by Mercy College in late March in what the administration has referred to as a necessary reconstruction and reorganization.
In an interview with The Impact, Mercy Provost Dr. James Melville, and Vice President for Enrollment Management, Dr. Thomas Milton, stated that the students are their main focus of the reorganization, and it is their mission to meet the educational needs of students, along with improving the services they receive on campus, ultimately improving their entire experience at Mercy.
When asked when these restructuring decisions were agreed upon and who was responsible for approving them, they both agreed that it had been looked into for years, but most discussions were done by President Louise Feroe's executive staff after studying student satisfaction surveys and studies, and assigning task forces to research a variety of ways a reorganization could be done. When asked if there were any other alternatives, and why this one was considered best, Melville and Milton stated that a task force spent several months researching a lot of alternative models in universities around the country, and after much consideration, decided on the "one-stop model." They added that Mercy is not the first to adopt this model, it has been adopted by quite a number of colleges and universities, and it has proven successful.
Harvey Kaye (Bronx), Charles Gruetzner (Yorktown), Augusto Hacthoun (Dobbs Ferry),
Lorraine Gerstner (Manhattan) and Susan Riehm (White Plains) were the Campus Deans beginning the academic year. Administration referred the names of the dismissed employees to the human resources department, which did not respond to The Impact by press time. There duties will be filled by newly-appointed campus managers.
An email to students from the president stated, "Campus managers will ensure that students and faculty have excellent facilities and support services. They will be responsible for creating a positive and supportive environment, as well as providing outreach to their communities."
