The Mercy Model U.N. team is a school sponsored organization that participates in simulations of the United Nations by "becoming" the U.N. delegation of the country that the team is assigned. Mercy College will be attending the conference this year in New York City and will be representing Grenada. Past teams have represented nations such as Botswana, Haiti, Jamaica, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland, Colombia, Cameroon, Honduras, Panama, El Salvador, Barbados, Dominican Republic and Portuguese Guinea. Though Mercy has been absent from the conference for the past two years, a beat has not been missed due to the sheer determination and enthusiasm of this present Model U.N. team. The squad consists of individuals from various backgrounds that are majoring in a variety of fields. The team has representatives from Albania, Nigeria, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Japan, Guyana, Korea, India and the United States.
"It is an amazing experience, and could not ask for a greater group of people to work with," said Ruvimbo Tsokodayi, a freshman journalism and media major form Zimbabwe.
Those who are part of the Model U.N. team are interested in world affairs and all they can do to improve our world through negotiation. The conference allows them to meet students from all over the United States and from numerous foreign nations. The team coach, Professor Frederick Shiels, has been a constant driving force for the Mercy Model U.N. team throughout the years. The team has high aspirations for the conference being held from March 22 to March 30.
